Disney’s The Lion King came on to the classical theater world with a masterful technique; critics claim that The Lion King, since its debut, had elevated the retelling of The Lion King's narrative and become more than just your typical play. With its execution and combination of dance, costume, and mainly animal puppetry, it became a very well-defined show compared to to many others. Because the narrative of the adapted musical focuses on animals, especially the future King Simba and exile and eventual return to his home, the hurdle for the production was to basically adapt a cartoon to live action without appearing inauthentic. Julie Taymor, the musical director, embraced this task and similarly embraced the art of utilizing puppets, skillfully using 3D animal puppets onstage combined with outfits and music displaying African culture that upgraded the famous play.

In current times, The Lion King has surely gained its rank as one of the most popular shows in every country it has visited. With two tours worldwide that have been running for over a decade and counting, and four other productions that have been performing for more than 20 years, The Lion King resumes to make theatrical history. It has always been met with standing ovations from both viewers and reviewers alike in its productions, while garnering numerous awards and nominations, including Grammy Awards and Helpmann Awards.

Since its first showing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July 1997 and subsequent shift to Broadway, New York in October of 1997, the reach of The Lion King musical has also grown immensely. Spanning several tours for over two decades, it has been holding seasons in several cities with both local North American and international seasons, spread over countries in Europe like Spain, United Kingdom, France, Germany, in addition to Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, and Singapore in Asia which only names a few in a very comprehensive record of locations.
