Amidst a tumultuous time and widespread rebellion in the 1800s in Paris, a convicted thief by the name of Jean Valjean severs his parole after almost two decades on the chain gang. Through the actions of a good samaritan, he is free to make his next move and creates a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, ultimately rising to become a factory owner and a mayor. Though previously lucky in concealing his identity from his nemesis Javert, he is inevitably drawn in the dangerous political landscape of Paris, wherein Valjean is compelled to make choices that would possibly put him and his daughter, Cosette, in danger.
This tale from Victor Hugo's novel, one of love and loss, has been produced successfully for roughly 40 years in multiple venues all over the world. Ever since its premiere in its home of Paris in the 1980s, it has secured its place not just as one of the most astounding shows of this generation, but also part of the highly nominated and most-awarded as well. In its global debut on its own, it swept the nominations and awards of the Tony Awards, with 12 nominations in total and 8 wins.
